1st Race (Saturday, July 19th)

The first race was set "A,R,S" roughly around 5nm, with the race starting on time at 10:10am. There was plenty of wind around 10-15knots at least. Only 6 of the 14 canoes registered raced this weekend.

Another great weekend with plenty of air, with a nice short course to start off with! There was plenty of time for lunch, almost too much time as the beer and food set in and soon naps became rampant among crews...

2nd Race (Saturday, July 19th)

After a Looooooong lunch break the carnage continued for another race! The race started at 2:40pm with the course set the same "A,R,S" but "X2" two times around, roughly a 10nm course with steady 15+ knots of wind.

Just as the first race, everyone knew the course only this time twice as long (possibly to wake everyone up from the long lunchtime nap) and plenty of wind to keep everyone on the edge of their boards. Mystery capsized scoring a DNF (an omen of what was to come the next day...) as well as Patrcia capsized before the race and was unable to start scoring a DNS. Silver Heel was dangerously close to going over but managed to stay hot on Jay Dee's stern. Island blossom sailed hard and fast right to the finish, giving a good 2 minutes from Jay Dee, the second to cross the line.

3rd Race (Sunday, July 20th)

The race was set again "A,R,S x2" although slightly longer roughly 10-11nm. The race started at 10:10am and with plenty of wind, was about 1hr 30mins+ long.

The last race of the weekend ended up being a rough one, plenty of wind and 2x around the "ARS" wore us all out. Patricia had some issues with their jib and ran her aground to fix the problem and was the last boat to cross the line. Jay Dee finished close behind Island Blossom only seconds between them (a great weekend for both canoes) Island Bird sailing only under a jib and a foresail (with a blind jib driver) manage to avoid the perils of strong wind and finish a solid "upright" weekend!

Mystery had a massive setback, the foremast gave way and broke in half nearing the finish of the race, obviously unable to finish... Hopefully they will be back this season, but that's a lot to ask for these boats!

Broken Mast

[Audio:http://www.blogcanoe.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/priceright.mp3]

I'm always thrilled to see as many canoes racing together as possible, and with the Spirit of Wyetown back racing, I was very excited for this season. Despite all the competition and rivalries I can honestly say it really is painful to have any canoe seriously damaged during or even towing to races. But as I've come to learn if you want to make an omelet you have break a few eggs! I can appreciate everything that goes into racing these "technological marvels" and I appreciate the entire crew coming out and racing along side us all!

A tribute to them...

?? ??? ? ?????? ?!

Another great weekend on the chester river, plenty of strong steady wind made for two days of great racing! Unfortunately there were only about 6 canoes that competed this weekend, but those that were able to compete raced hard and fast! Although it was a bit of a rough tow back to St. Michaels..

The wind picked up some in the afternoon for the second race which made for a more interesting race!

Island Lark got the gun for the second race!

The Gun

[audio:http://www.blogcanoe.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/explosion1.mp3]

Edmee S. was unable to start on time and did not race scoring a DNS., The Island Blossom capsized during the race which scored her a DNF , Patricia capsized during the race scoring her a DNF and Persistence was DSQ'd due to a protest by Patricia for a port-starboard issue.

3rd Race

"the Protest Committee made the decision to throw out Race # 3 due to a number of protests against the RC for setting the “B” mark too close to shallow water causing three LC’s to run aground." by RHYC Race Committee

Well, we all appreciate the race committee for all their hard work and RYHC for hosting this event and everyone who has volunteered to make these races happen.

The "B" mark set far up the Chester river past Cliffs Point, was too shallow water for anyone to react. Island lark was the first to round the mark and quickly rand aground without warning, the Jay Dee hot on her heels quickly tacked preventing a grounding and was able to gain a huge lead. Mystery ran aground at the mark causing her to capsize while Silver Heel was coming around as well and ended up running aground and being on top of Mystery almost causing her to capsize and at one point she was "wing and wing" and rolling back and forth... It was quite a site to be held and to their credit those crews managed to stay unhurt as far as I am aware!

It was still a tight race for the remaining canoes, Jay Dee leading and Island Lark gaining, as well as Island Blossom in hot pursuit. The finish was extremely tight with Jay Dee and Island lark neck and neck with a slight puff pushing Jay Dee over first by a nose! But to all who sailed it was a very good day, and there was plenty of strong wind that continued to build throughout the afternoon. All the crews assembled at the Hewe's for the award ceremony later.

It was a great day for a race!

About 10-15 knots of wind predicted which kept everyone on their toes the first day out, with the threat of looming storms in the late afternoon. But the race was shortened on he last mark when dark skies rolled over.

Island Lark took the first gun of the season!

Another great day, with plenty of wind (15-20knots predicted.) Back to Back races were scheduled but after 3 canoes capsized they ended up being a break between. There was also a threat of thunderstorms to come through late in the afternoon!

Island Blossom got the gun for the second race!

Both Island Bird and Persistence capsized before the start of the race which scored them both a DNS, and the Spirit of WyeTowne was unable to race due to a broken rudder. Magic ended up capsizing toward the end of the race and also put her out for the second race as well.

The second race was just as rough as the first race, the wind didn't seem to drop much and fewer canoes ended up finishing the race!

Carl Greibel accepts for Island Lark, the John E. Baybutt perpetual trophy for being the overall winner of the 4th July series. This trophy was donated by Louis and Betsy Jallade in the memory of Betsy Jallade's father Dr. John Baybutt (my Grandfather.) He was a big part of the MRYC and Log Canoe racing, also member to many local clubs/groups (MRYC, CBYC, Chesapeake Bay Log Canoe Racing, Historical Society ect.) as well as being chief of Pediatrics at Easton Memorial Hospital from approx. 1948-1968. In his memory a silver pitcher was dedicated and presented to each overall winner of the 4th July racing series.

It was definitely a rough weekend for most, I know I'm still recovering (those boards hurt somethin' fierce)! But all in all it was a great was to start the season and get everyone back into the swing of things! It was also awesome to see Spirit of WyeTowne back out racing again, always good to see more canoes out as well as Noddy is set to compete the season! I'm and looking forward to seeing all these canoes competing together again, it really honors the fine history of these boats to keep them in competition and for everyone to see how truly unique and amazing Log Canoes really are.

This pretty much sums up my weekend experience perfectly...

Now that\'s what I\'m Talkin\' about!

"Now That's What I'm Talkin' About!"

Special thanks to Jeannie Wilson (Miss Jeannie) for all of her help and support! Also for providing the race results to me!
